Self-ride personal watercraft sessions along designated stretches of Dubai coastline, usually sold in 30- or 60-minute blocks with a guide riding alongside.
How it operates
Sessions run from an operator's beach or marina base in 30- or 60-minute blocks, after a safety briefing and a life-jacket fitting, with a guide riding alongside. Riding stays inside the buoyed zones the authorities designate — Dubai Marina, Umm Suqeim 1 and 2, and Jumeirah 2 and 3 — which are kept clear of swimming beaches, harbours and protected areas. Operators need RTA marine permitting on top of a trade licence, and Dubai Police and the Dubai Maritime Authority enforce on the water.
For agents
Operating and selling mechanics
- Only book operators who can evidence their marine permit — enforcement is active and an impounded craft ruins a client's day.
- The permitted-zone rule means the 'jet ski to the Burj Al Arab' promise some sellers make needs checking, not assuming.
For travellers
What to brief your guests on
- Life jackets are worn at all times and riding stays inside the buoyed zones. A rider under 16 must be accompanied by a custodian or a qualified coach.
Regulation and safety
- Rental operations require RTA marine permitting in addition to a trade licence; Dubai Police and the Dubai Maritime Authority enforce compliance on the water.
- Official guidance names three approved areas: Dubai Marina, Umm Suqeim 1 and 2, and Jumeirah 2 and 3. Riders must stay inside designated zones, which are marked by buoys and kept away from swimming beaches, harbours and protected ecological areas.
- The driver of a jet ski must not be under 16 years of age unless accompanied by a custodian or qualified coach.
- Life jackets must be worn at all times and fitted correctly.
- Dubai Police cite a speed limit of 5–7 knots in general riding zones.
- A joint Dubai Police / Dubai Maritime Authority inspection campaign in July 2025 issued 431 fines and impounded 41 jet skis, for violations including expired licences, restricted-zone riding and underage operators.
- Rental permits are issued by the RTA through its Marine Transport Association under 2008 rules; the Dubai Maritime Authority and Dubai Police jointly enforce on the water.
