artificial island / resort district

Palm Jumeirah

The resort island — a trunk of towers, fronds of villas and a crescent of flagship hotels.

What it is

An artificial palm-shaped archipelago in the Gulf, developed by Nakheel and constructed by the Dutch dredging specialist Van Oord; construction began June 2001. Roughly divided into a trunk, residential fronds, and an outer crescent breakwater. Resident population over 25,000 as of 2022.

Rail

1 station within reach

From DXB

approx. 40–55 min

From DWC

approx. 30–45 min

Coaches

Good at the major crescent resorts, which are built for group arrivals. Poor on the fronds — frond villas are for cars and minivans only.

District brief checked 28 July 2026. Approximate and traffic dependent. Planning estimates from our own ground team, not published figures.

Who it suits

Right guest, right district.

Best for

  • honeymoon
  • luxury
  • family resort stay
  • villa groups

Less good for

  • business
  • guests without a car who want to explore
  • budget

Buy the Palm for the resort, not for the location. Once a guest is on the crescent they are committed to taxis for everything off-island.

We book it most for

  • honeymoons
  • luxury family resort stays
  • villa buyouts on the fronds
  • incentive groups with a single-resort programme

Getting around

What a guest can reach without asking us.

On foot

Not a walking district — plan on vehicles.

Walkable only within a single resort or within Nakheel Mall / The Pointe. The island itself is not a walking environment — the crescent is a highway.

  • Nakheel Mall
  • The Pointe
  • Al Ittihad Park
  • the guest's own resort beach

Nearest metro

  • Sobha Realty · Red Line

Off-island. Reach it via tram to Palm Jumeirah tram station, then onward — but see the monorail suspension.

Dubai Metro station names are commercially sponsored and get renamed. These are the names current at 28 July 2026.

Landmarks

  • Atlantis The Palm
  • The View at The Palm
  • Al Ittihad Park

How we operate here

Ground truth, from the people driving it.

Traffic pinch points

  • The trunk is the single road on and off the island — one incident closes the whole Palm
  • Atlantis forecourt on weekend evenings and during Aquaventure opening/closing waves
  • The crescent has no U-turns for long stretches; a missed turn costs significant time

Coach access

Good at the major crescent resorts, which are built for group arrivals. Poor on the fronds — frond villas are for cars and minivans only.

On the ground

With the monorail suspended, every Palm movement is a road movement. Budget more vehicle time than the map suggests.
