Dubai is one of 7. Here is what the other six are for — how far each is by road, what anchors a day there, and what we actually operate on the ground rather than resell.

The federation

A country you can cross in a morning.

The United Arab Emirates is a federation of 7 emirates, and the useful thing about it for anyone building an itinerary is scale: the whole country is drivable, and the emirate borders are the interesting part rather than an obstacle.

They are not variations on the same theme. Abu Dhabi is the largest by land area by an enormous margin and holds the capital, the Grand Mosque and the Saadiyat museums. Sharjah is the cultural emirate and the only one with coastline on both the Arabian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. Ras Al Khaimah has the mountains. Fujairah sits entirely on the east coast. Ajman and Umm Al Quwain are the quiet ones, and are honest day-trips rather than week-long destinations — we would rather say so than sell you a thin programme.

What changes when a guest crosses a border is operational, not scenic. Sharjah’s alcohol rules decide hotel selection and the whole food-and-beverage plan before anything else does, and we put the current position in writing before a programme is signed rather than asking anyone to rely on a web page. Abu Dhabi’s Grand Mosque has a dress code and restricted hours that break an unbriefed itinerary more often than traffic does. The Jebel Jais road in Ras Al Khaimah is long, steep and weather-sensitive, and its adventure slots sell out. None of that appears in a brochure; all of it appears below, alongside 45 anchor attractions sourced to the operators and government portals that publish them, and 3 more that are announced but not yet open — labelled as opening, never as available.

One team in Bur Dubai handles all 7: the same coordinators, the same drivers, the same phone number when something moves. That matters most on a twin-centre — a Dubai week with three nights in Ras Al Khaimah or a full day in Abu Dhabi is the single most common shape we build, and it only works if the hand-off between emirates is nobody’s hand-off at all.

  • Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

    Accommodates about 55,000 worshippers; the main prayer hall holds approximately 7,800. 82 domes, the central dome approximately 32.6 m in diameter and 84 m high; more than a thousand columns flank the exterior arcades, 1,096 in the exterior area. Houses the world's largest hand-knotted carpet at 5,400 sq m and 35 tonnes, recognised by Guinness World Records in 2007. The largest chandeliers are 12 m in diameter and 15.5 m high, each containing 15,500 LEDs, in stainless steel gilded with 24-carat gold. Construction began 5 November 1996; opened for worship on Eid Al Adha 2007.

On the ground

Abu Dhabi is a full day out of Dubai, not a half-day. Grand Mosque dress code and Friday hour restrictions are the two things that most often break an unbriefed itinerary. Yas Island's proximity to AUH (stated by the operator as 15 minutes) makes it the better base for anyone flying into Abu Dhabi.

Ras Al Khaimah

On the ground

RAK is the strongest 'second destination' in a Dubai twin-centre. The Jebel Jais road is long, steep and mountain-weather sensitive — check conditions and pre-book adventure slots, which sell out. Sell it October to April; midsummer undercuts the mountain product.

Fujairah

The only emirate located completely on the eastern coast of the UAE along the Gulf of Oman. Its shores extend along the Gulf of Oman for about 70 km. Bordered by Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah to the west, Sharjah to the south and Oman to the north. Distinguished by rugged mountains, valleys, waterfalls, oases and sandy beaches.

What anchors a day here

  • Al Bidya Mosque

    Built in 1599 — radiometric analysis by the University of Minnesota on samples from the foundations dates construction to approximately 1599 CE with a margin of error of ±9 years. Located on the road to Dibba Al Fujairah, 35 km north of the city of Fujairah. No timber was used to raise the roof, which rests on a central column carrying four domes, each made up of three nested domes stacked vertically. Restored and officially reopened in March 2003.

Umm Al Quwain

The quiet one — lagoons, mangroves, gazelles and almost no crowds.

Economy

Fishing is a key contributor to the economy; the emirate exports seafood throughout Europe and the Middle East. It also hosts a poultry farm at Falaj Al Mualla and the Ahmed Bin Rashid Port development, and pursues a Sustainable Blue Economy Strategy 2031.
